The air itself seems alive with the sound of bagpipes, the smoky scent of peat and the quiet focus of artisans perfecting their craft. Scotland is a land where skill is refined into mythology, where every street whispers of heritage, and every handmade piece speaks of generations of devotion. As much as it is world-renowned for many of these crafted items, it also excels at others, including its first-ever Scottish fragrance house. Scottish Landscape by Alan Frijns
From the misty Highland mountains to the cobbled wynds of ancient streets, Scotland offers a bounty of civilised richness. Known all over the world for some of the most luxurious products created in this small country.
Scottish Whisky Barriers by wintermeyer
We may well know about the Scottish whiskies, distilled over centuries, and Smoked salmon, caressed by the sea. Gins steeped in wild local botanicals or even woven clothes made with pride, but there is more.
Find the weavers who spin ‘fog into cashmere’, silversmiths who ‘interpret light as crystal and silver’, and bakers who add warmth to shortbread and oatcakes, every manifestation of Scotland’s spirit, crafted and honed by her people.
Alongside these world-renowned luxuries are lesser, globally known indulgences. Luxurious leather goods, crafted with passion, their supple hides shaped by hands fluent in the language of the rich, rugged landscape.
Then discover personal wooden items, crafted from Scotland’s ancient forests, where Oak, Elm, and Pine have survived the ages, absorbing whispers of wind and rain, only to be transformed into masterpieces.
Gemlike Raspberries, ripe in the endless, unhurried skies of the north; a flavour that ripens with age. Good soil and stony shores yield crops of high quality, fruits, inspired by patience and reverence.
First-class honey, amber-coloured and perfumed, is gathered from wild heather and wild clover by bees that buzz through misty dales.
And langoustines, delicious and flavourful, are lifted from the chill, spotless depths of the sea, their sweet, oceanic, delicate flavour echoing the sea’s clarity.
Even the mighty Harris Tweed, crafted by hand in the Outer Hebrides, carries a proud heritage in every fibre. Dyed in the colours of the moors and sky, spun with stories of salt air and stone, it bears the beat of the weaver’s loom in its humble strength.
These remarked luxuries, so frequently missed in plain sight, are the soft wealth of Scotland, a gentle poetry of nature and of craftsmanship, shaped by the people of their times, who knew refinement, resided not in fame, but in the attention, the spirit, and the eternal beauty of the thing that they create.
And now, Scotland reveals another bloom, a new hero, a fragrant and unexpected expression of its creative and natural landscape; meet Kingdom Scotland, its first fragrance house.
This season, Kingdom Scotland, the country’s first luxury perfume house, invites you to experience Scotland in a way you’ve never imagined: through scent.
Founded by Imogen Russon-Taylor, Kingdom Scotland doesn’t just bottle fragrance; it bottles stories, paying tribute to Scotland’s adventurous plant explorers and its wild, rugged terrain. There are four elixirs in the collection to explore, each a facet of the wilderness, the flora and fauna of this small but mighty land.
Their newest fragrance, Kingdom Botanica, is a green-floral, woody Eau de parfum inspired by over 350 years of botanical heritage at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.
Two years in the making, it brings together more than 35 natural, sustainable ingredients, including spiced Plum blossom, pink Pepper, Blackcurrant stem, Pine needles, and giant Redwoods, to create a biodiverse, unisex scent as alive as a Scottish landscape.
Sharp, bright with hits of spice, woods and greenery. Proceeds from Kingdom Botanica help fund the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh’s vital work in combating climate change.
Or, if you prefer something wilder, discover Portal, an aromatic perfume that transports you to the ancient Caledonian forest. Notes of Green Vegetation, Bergamot, Oakmoss, and Vetiver evoke the feeling of wandering through moss-dappled trees on a soft spring morning. The bright opening belies the unexpected hits of smoky, verdant greenness. A distinct and inspiring walk caught in a bottle.
For something darker and more intense, Metamorphic is Scotland’s rugged landscape in a bottle, a perfume of transmutation. Opening with spice and smoke of Pepper and Tobacco notes that move into a core of Incense, Islay malt, and dark red Rose, finally settling into warm Amber and sexy Leather that linger like the spirit of stone and flame. Heavy, smouldering, unforgettable, it changes on the skin as the rocks metamorphose through the millennia.
Finally, meet Albaura, a tribute to the spirit of adventure of the polar explorer and Scottish botanist Isobel Wylie Hutchison, as much as it is to Scotland’s ancient name, Alba.
The perfume captures the cold, glacial clarity of cold snow and ice, punctuated by wintry botanicals and crisp berries. It reveals a subdued Arctic Poppy at its heart, rooting down through a base of Atlas Cedar, Rock Moss, and Ambergris. Independent, pure, and intensely beautiful, a perfume as rare and bold as the lady it was created in honour of.
Imogen, the brand creator, has worked exclusively with Cent. She shares her insight into her love and passion for a handful of the ingredients she uses from Scotland and explains why they inspire her.
Portal
Caledonian Forests
‘I chose the inspiration of ancient Caledonian woodlands for the Kingdom Scotland, Portal fragrance. This perfume transports me instantly. I think the idea actually came to me years ago, while working in London. The thought of walking in a Scottish forest, an ancient Caledonian woodland in springtime, was often something I turned to when feeling stretched and overworked. It helped lift me out of the sometimes intense, urban stress’.
‘The inspiration for Portal is actually a scent memory. I visited the West Coast of Scotland every spring with my family as a child and remember spending the days outside in the forests, climbing trees with my sister and cousins. These ancient Celtic woodlands are among the last remnants of a once vast primeval forest. Their essence lends depth and a timeless green heart to the scent – grounding, meditative, and noble’.
‘Portal eau de parfum is an escape to a sylvan wonderland, with a spring-like outdoor freshness, a carpet of wild herbs and the sweetness of wildflowers, vibrant green mosses in every shade, and a darker, woody, barky base of the forest floor’.
Bark & Scots Pine
‘There’s nothing quite like the fresh, resinous scent of Scots pine trees after the rain. Scots pine is invigorating and luminous, a breath of forest air’.
Verdant Flora
‘This is Scotland in the full bloom of Spring – green, thriving, and utterly alive. A forest carpet of soft mosses, ferns, and wild herbs creates an aromatic lushness’.
ALBAURA
Iced Berries
‘I love the idea of winter fruit clinging to frostbitten branches – sharp, sweet, and glinting like jewels in the snow. Albaura opens with fresh, cold, elemental notes, like taking a breath of crisp air on a bright winter, blue-sky day. I chose juniper berries and imagined them encased in ice, slowly thawing in the morning sun. This sharp iced berry note offers crystalline brightness and a sense of clarity and northern light. Together with iced botanicals and herbal notes, the fragrance carries the redolence of gin and tonic – a nod to my career in the aromatic world of luxury spirits.‘
Arctic Poppy
‘The Arctic poppy is more than a botanical note, it is a symbol of survival, grace, and wonder in the most extreme conditions. I chose it for Albaura because it echoes the story of Isobel Wylie Hutchison, the pioneering Scottish botanist and Arctic explorer who inspired this scent’.
‘Isobel was captivated by the Arctic poppy for its delicate form and extraordinary ability to thrive in frozen landscapes. In her writings, she often referenced how its golden petals caught the light like miniature suns, blooming defiantly where few other flowers could survive. It became a metaphor for her own life – quietly determined, curious, and luminously feminine in a world shaped by harshness and endurance.‘
‘In Albaura, the Arctic poppy adds a sophisticated floral note with a crystalline coolness – like petals preserved in ice. It brings glacial elegance and a breath of purity to the composition. It captures the contrast between fragility and strength and serves as a quiet tribute to the untamed wilds of the far North, and the spirit of a woman who walked them alone, notebook in hand’.
‘I chose it to echo that stillness, that rare light, and that unexpected beauty, and to remind the wearer that resilience can be gentle and quietly bold’.
Rock Moss
‘This note speaks to the geology of Scotland – moss growing on ancient stone, rich with mineral dampness. It adds texture, a touch of earthiness, and a strong sense of place. I imagine lichens growing on rocks in bright chartreuse tones, catching sunlight on coastal stones, a striking, elemental image.‘
METAMORPHIC
Minerals, Islay Malt
‘I studied geology, and Scotland’s mineral wealth – from gneiss to quartz to basalt – informs much of my creative process. Add to that the smoky, peaty complexity of an Islay West Coast single malt, and you get an alchemy of earth, fire, and time. This note is a nod to our whisky heritage and the art of slow transformation.’
KINGDOM BOTANICA
An Extraordinary Scent, Over 350 Years in the Making.
Created in collaboration with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
A story of biodiversity in scent. I call it ‘Botanical Maximalism’.
‘A vibrant, opulent and woody-green-floral scent. Inspired by the adventurous Scottish plant hunters of the past, present and future. This is biodiversity in a bottle, expertly crafted with over 35 of the finest sustainable and ethical aromatic ingredients, to celebrate over 355 prolific years of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh’.
Green Botanicals
‘These speak to the apothecary traditions and natural remedies of the past – a healing greenness, both crisp and revitalising. I use this to add brightness, freshness, and a touch of wild herbalism’.
Cassis (Blackcurrant) Bud and Stem
‘Reflecting the fruit garden at the RBGE, nestled among the community and student gardens, this plant has a long history in the Garden. Blackcurrant was also grown in the original physic garden and documented in the 1683 Hortus Medicus – an early catalogue of medicinal plants.‘
‘This ingredient is an evocative, sustainable, and natural aromatic oil. It adds a fresh, green cassis aspect and creates an effervescent, verdant note at the opening of the fragrance, almost like walking into the botanical warmth of the Glasshouses.‘
Pine Needle
‘Representing the classic Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris) present in all four RBGE gardens, this is Scotland’s national tree and the only native pine in Great Britain. Once widespread across Caledonian forests, the Scots pine can live for up to 700 years and supports rare native flora and lichens – a focus of RBGE’s conservation research.‘
‘This note creates a crisp, fresh, forest-like aroma in the top notes of Kingdom Botanica.’
As well as the four scents, Kingdom Scotland and The Macallan have joined forces to create something truly special, transferring the spirit of The Macallan’s fabled Scottish home to perfumery. Together, they’ve developed, in collaboration, two limited edition candles, each unearthing the history of a different part of the estate.
First, Nurtured by Nature, evokes the pure, crisp atmosphere of The Macallan’s expansive 485-acre estate. It uncovers the pure Mountain Air, the River Mist of the River Spey, Rich Mosses, and the damp, loamy smell of local Scottish forests, a scented odyssey through sky, river, and forest.
The second, Spiritual Home, draws inspiration from The Macallan’s historic home, the Easter Elchies House. It preserves the house’s warmth and elegance, with top notes of lightly scented Garden Roses, Rich Leather, Silky Wood, and the Comfort of the Fireside. It speaks of heritage, welcome, and eternal charm.
Both the candles exquisitely arrive in hand-crafted vessels and aim to take the individual lighting the candles directly to The Macallan spiritual home in Scotland.
These are scents that transport you to Scotland’s wild places, its heritage, and the indomitable spirits that shaped it. Whether you feel inspired by the sheer biodiversity of Kingdom Botanica, the ancient forests of Portal, the blackened expanse of Metamorphic, or the cold innocence of Albaura, each perfume has a story to tell.
