Fall In Love With A Mystical Musical and Perfumed Memory

Young Italians, brother and sister Andrea & Chiara Valdo, arrived in London and the first thing they did was catch a musical sightseeing bus, one that took them from the central london location of Handel House, also the home of Jimi Hendrix in the late 1960s, via that famous zebra crossing in Abbey Road in 1969 where four Beatles had their picture taken in motion. Next up, to Camden in the 1980s, for a ska-filled two-tone time. Camera in hand, flash at the ready, crossing over to west London to hang in 1976 with The Clash, before turning left into Ladbroke Grove in the early 1980s for a dance alongside the Jazzy B sound systems. The bus goes back and forth in time, from the 50s to the 90s onwards to the 2020s. The most important stop for them was in 1985 at Wembley Stadium when the world turned its eyes to London for The Gig of the century; Live Aid. Here, they feel the bright lights of the city in one space. They may well have gotten off the bus, for a while, their camera stuffed with images, but the motor keeps on going into London’s musical future. Let’s face it, London has created musical memories for many. And for Italian perfumers Andrea & Chiara Valdo, it was no different.

The recollection of a first love, a special holiday song, a chart topper beloved by two friends, a conscious moment in time. Memories are for us all, the ‘records’ of our experiences, both conscious and unconscious. The brain’s way of recording, storing, and retrieving information about our past experiences.

Another great memory maker is perfume; the nose connects with the brain, and certain scents will deliver us back to a time, a place, a person. Just like a song, the two are human, powerful ‘photographs’

London has been the birthplace of many musical movements, such as Punk and Britpop, and is home to iconic artists like David Bowie, The Clash, Amy Winehouse and The Rolling Stones; a set of musicians and songstresses that have kept the beacon of brightness alive in this city

As lovers of music, the dynamic perfumed duo have created a collection of fragrances all based around music, with their latest being a love letter in scent to London called London Hall

‘It is the summer of 1985 that we truly experience it for the first time, as if we already knew it, as if the atmosphere was completely familiar. We immediately realise that this city is the temple, the cradle, the muse, the melting pot that fascinates and inspires every music lover as if it were an open-air concert hall.‘

Music in London is diverse and eccentric; it’s the city that gave birth to riotous Punk music but also The Kinks, who could quite happily sing about a nice cup of tea. It created its own style of reggae called Lovers Rock, to hardcore Grime via Glam Rock and the New Romantics. So, how did they look to interpret these diverse sounds into scent?

They choose to pair up again with master Perfumer Julien Rasquinet, with whom they have collaborated several times. And together they wove the different scented melodies, the multiple facets of London, from raw and dirty streets to flower-filled parks and traditional stores. Its modernity and its heritage.

It opens boldly, singing loudly with the warmth of spice, of soft, sweet tinge of leather from Saffron and woody-earthy Cumin, followed by a hint of sharpness from Lemon. Akin to the shiny leather jacket of a dynamic rocker, hard edged by very lovable.

The heart of this scent is a tribute to the great gardens and floral parks of the renowned town. Here, a fusion of bold buds ripens to bring a rich bouquet, the best there is, which includes rich Bulgarian Rose, the perfect medling scent of Freesia alongside the regal queen Jasmin Absolute. But this is London, so woody balsamic smoke of Olibanum reminds us this is a city of stratas, and where rich and poor, dirty and clean, rock, pop and classical meet, so resinous, and leathery aroma, with sweet, woody, and animalic facets tie up the heart and echo an ambery finish via Labdanum Resinoid

The crescendo of the significant tune comes in the ‘sounds’ of woods via Cedarwood and animalic Leather, alongside damp earth of Patchouli and a finale of eahy grassy smoke via decadent and delicious Vetiver.
