Unveiled at the 19th International Festival of Contemporary Dance at La Biennale di Venezia (25 July – 2 August 2025), this unique installation blends cutting-edge technology with powerful choreography.  It invites audiences to become part of the performance, not just spectators.  Here, dance, science, and technology come together to create magic. There are few people who truly do things first, Sir Wayne McGregor is one of them. His dynamic new dance experience takes place inside a 360-degree LED screen, a large cylinder that wraps around the audience. Designed by Jeffrey Shaw and Sarah Kenderdine, the space shows stunning 3D visuals in super high definition.  Only 20 people enter at a time, making the experience feel personal and special.

Inside, you don’t just watch the dance, you’re inside it.  You hear sounds all around you, created by Invisible Mountain using special technology and artificial intelligence.  You see hyperreal dancers, digitally created avatars of real dancers, from Company Wayne McGregor and Hong Kong Ballet, moving in a way that feels both futuristic and deeply emotional.

To truly understand how amazing On The Other Earth is, it helps to know a little about Sir Wayne McGregor’s past work.  He has always pushed the limits of dance.  In his work, Autobiography (2017), he explored memory and identity with the help of a neuroscientist, bringing complex human emotions into dance.  In Atomos (2013), he mixed fast-moving choreography with creative lighting and design.

His groundbreaking work brought Margaret Atwood’s post-apocalyptic vision to the stage in the three-act ballet MADDADDAM, based on the writer’s acclaimed trilogy of novels: ‘Oryx and Crake’, ‘The Year of the Flood’ and ‘MaddAddam’ and was received with great acclaim.

His composition attracts audiences across the world of dance, but also opens up this medium to the fashion world and the contemporary art world. His original, intelligent, and emotive works inspire audiences, with works that reach out beyond boundaries.

His audiences know that he commissions new scores from some of the world’s greatest composers and musicians from across the musical scale, including Max Richter, Steve Reich, Nils Frahm, A Winged Victory For the Sullen, Jamie XX, Mark Ronson, and Jack White from The White Stripes, to name but a few.

Another facet of his work is the fact that he also collaborates with fashion visionaries such as Daniel Lee, Gareth Pugh,  and Moritz Junge

Alongside working with visual artists such as Tacita Dean, Edmund de Waal, John Pawson, and Julien Opie, highlighting again that his audience is filled with an expanded dialogue open to far more than much traditional dance

Since becoming Artistic Director of Biennale Danza in 2021, a role he has extended, thanks to his extraordinary vision and impact on the festival, McGregor has transformed it into a space where bold ideas, science, and technology meet art.

As McGregor steers the creative direction of Biennale Danza 2025 under the theme Myth Makers, his new work, On The Other Earth, continues that journey. It removes the barrier between performers and the audience.  Visual artists Ravi Deepres and Theresa Baumgartner helped create a space where real people, digital avatars, and AI blend together in a new kind of storytelling.

After its world premiere in Venice at Sala d’Armi E, the installation will be shown at the Venice Immersive section of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival (27 August – 6 September 2025).  It will then travel to London’s Stone Nest for its UK premiere, followed by its Asian debut at Tai Kwun in Hong Kong in 2026. Supported by the Italian Ministry of Culture, the Veneto Region, and Rolex, this work is already making waves around the world.

Sir Wayne McGregor shows us that dance, science, and technology can work together to create something truly beyond human and truly magical.  On The Other Earth is more than a performance. It’s an invitation to step into a new world where you don’t just see the dance, you become part of it
