Tracing back through civilisation, the history of sand exists as a humble, effortless material that can slip through our hands without much thought. Yet it is formed through various natural processes over thousands of years, such as weathering and erosion of rocks that break down to small particles. After many years, through the alchemy of nature and the skilled hands of humans, the humblest element, sand, slowly transforms into glass.

Glass, a substance we use now for everyday life. From tools and weapons to architecture and vessels, it is a continuous and essential part of our daily life.

The History Of Glass

The history of glass already extends back more than 3500 years. When looking back to the period before the human invention of glass, nature had already gifted the world with obsidian, a natural glass that was once used to make tools and weapons.

The exact origin of man made glass is unknown, but researchers believe it was first created around 3500 years ago in Mesopotamia. In ancient times, glass was a rare luxury, primarily used for decorative beads and small vessels.

Industrialisation

After the invention of glassblowing in Roman controlled Syria, glass was faster and cheaper to make, and therefore it was far more accessible to the general population.

But then, during the medieval period, glass also took on a spiritual dimension. Stained glass windows in cathedrals and churches were used as storytelling tools, educating the largely illiterate population about biblical narratives and the lives of saints. From Mesopotamia to Murano, and from cathedral windows to sculpted vessels, glass has always captured human creativity and artistry.

Jolipnj is the vision of artist Chloé Foulquier. Each unique piece of glass is made from the fusion of passionate factors and chemical reactions, forming artefacts that crystallise an instant forever.

Chloé Foulquier uses borosilicate (low-melting) glass to create unique, artistically hand-sculpted pieces using a blowtorch. The variations in oxygen and gases are the reason for its unique textures and colours.

Once processed, the glass is annealed to remove internal stress; this step makes the pieces stronger. The creation becomes more than a sculpted piece: the jewellery becomes a conversation.

Andrew Logan, Britain’s leading sculptural artist with over 50 years of experience and creator of the Alternative Miss World pageant (launched 1972), mesmerises with his experimental use of glass, mirror, metal, and colour. His works blend sculpture, jewellery, performance, and fashion. He believes that ‘art can be discovered anywhere,’ and his creations often explore themes of fantasy, glamour, and spirituality.

His latest exhibition, Around the World in 80 Years, celebrates his lifelong artistic journey and his love of transformation. The exhibition begins with a ‘Tea Ceremony’ choreographed by Andrew Logan, a special performance element that showcases his signature theatrical touch. He has inspired figures like Derek Jarman, Thea Porter, Leigh Bowery, Zandra Rhodes, Grayson Perry, and Malcolm McLaren.

Andrew Logan’s masterpiece jewellery is designed from mirror, glass, recycled beads, wire, glitter, ephemera, and resin. Each piece, from vibrant hearts to celestial suns, harmonises colour, texture, and found materials to create playful yet sophisticated adornments.

A combination of traditional jewellery techniques and mixed media, it celebrates hearts, suns, stars, butterflies, and abstract forms. Signed and dated by the artist, these creations mirror his experimental approach and his talent for transforming everyday objects into wearable art. This exhibition celebrates his lifelong artistic journey, a world where fantasy, glamour, and spirituality meet in vibrant forms.
