Well, yes,  a philosophical and protoscientific tradition that sought to purify matter and achieve immortality through mystical and experimental means. Its primary goals were to transform base metals into gold, find a universal cure for diseases, and discover a potion for eternal life. A precursor to modern chemistry and medicine, blending early scientific and philosophical beliefs with metaphysical concepts. Ancient perfumery was rooted in alchemy and mysticism as it was often used to create rituals and transform materials, passing down a form of craft wisdom. The Omani High Perfumery House of Amouage presents a new addition to their Library Collection: Opus XVI Timber.  It has deep roots in the magic and mystery of the Eastern Arabic lands, with the collection having its inspiration from the vision of ancient wisdom, collected over centuries. 

This new elixir is an olfactory homage to the perennial knowledge of, and the power of, trees. Wood notes are not unexpected in perfumery, particularly in the base.

Yet scents that are almost wholly wood-based are rare, and it takes exceptionally skilled creators who can put together a perfume that is a fully woody juice.

There is one type of wood in the Middle East, particularly in Oman, that is the most precious of all, the Frankincense tree (Boswellia), for which the resin in perfumery is most prized.

Fragrance Oil

This aromatic resin was a valuable commodity used in many different religious practices where it represented divinity and the priestly role. The smoke from burning frankincense was thought to symbolise prayers rising to heaven. 

So this new scent Opus XVI, Timber, is by its very nature, mystic, spiritual and a modern form of alchemy, where the perfume nose acts as the high priest of scent.

Described by the house as a vertical fragrance as straight as a tall tree, yet with every tree comes branches, and it’s a good explanation for the notes that make up the scent.

An unusual opening of clean, green wood of Cypress and warm, spicy, and aromatic notes of Caradmon with added nods of warm from Pink Pepper, and Cocoa. 

The central theme of the perfume, its heart if you like, is a bold, bracing exploration of woody energy. After all, the tree is the representation of life to expect from this central pole a full bursting scent, with, of course, the all-important mysterious Frankincense. This is a complex note with multi-facets from resinous soft smoke and spice, which allows for the other notes to pair up. These are the fresh peppery wood of Juniper and rich resin, balsamic Pine green of Fir Balsam. A fresh herbal aroma with floral and slightly woody, camphoraceous undertones from Lavender that brings the lightest flowing touch to the opening as she opens her branches to the sun.

To finally keep this rooted to keep it alive, find earthy Patchouli of course, softer wood notes to add a creamy flourish via Sandalwood, brightness of cedarwood, a kiss of sweet warmth from Vanilla Bourbon and spirituality via the mystic, alchemy and soft smoky notes of Palo Santo. These woody facets bring life and history, and majesty to the fragrance. If ever a perfume was a magical spell, then this is it.
