Cistus, The Goat’s Love of This Flowered Perfume

Perfume contains some unusual ingredients, connections, and even some rather intriguing links to history. Some special ingredients make for wonderful inclusions into magical potions. But one does wonder, how did it become known that whale, sick rotting wood or even resin that a goat would brush up against would make for a beautiful scent? Unusual Perfume Ingredients

Yes, it’s true, whale sick is known in perfumery as Ambergris (produced in the digestive system of sperm whales, which they then throw up) is a very much prized ingredient in scent, with sweet, earthy, musky, and marine facets.

Aquilaria Tree Oud

Equally strange is a diseased, rotten wood from the Aquilaria tree, used in perfume and known as Agarwood oil or Oud. It’s rich, woody, resinous and luxurious. It’s hard to even understand, let alone know how these were ‘discovered’, let alone who first thought to mix them in perfumes. A similar strange ingredient is Cistus

Citrus Plant

Cistus is also commonly known as Rock rose. A delicate flower that is fleeting, with each bloom only lasting a day. Goats loved to graze on rockrose plants would have the resin, called labdanum, adhere to their coats. The resin was then gathered by shearing the goats or combing their coats. Shepherds would also use tools to comb the plants directly. Also a facetsed scent with resinous, amber-like, and balsamic, with leathery, woody, and slightly sweet undertones.

Iso E Super

But then there are perfume notes that don’t come from weird nature but in a way from weird chemistry. Iso E Super is one of the anamalies. In 1973, it was created in a lab and initially used to add a woody-amber and velvety note to many perfumes in low concentrations. Along it toddled until two major events changed its life.

Perfume History

In 1988 Dior released Fahrenheit, a landmark fragrance that used a high dosage of Iso E Super, a move that kicked off a trend of experimenting with the ingredient. And then came along a wonderfully mad professor of perfumery, Geza Schoen.

Molecule 01 +

He noticed that many of the perfumes he loved contained Iso E Super, and so he created Molecule 01, which contained 100% Iso E Super. This made the ingredient the star of its own fragrance and elevated its status. It was not an immediate hit as some people are anosmic to the molecule (meaning they can’t smell it); however, once worn, people went insane for it. Wearers were often stopped in the street and asked what scent they were wearing. And so began a magnificent fragrance story, a collection of fragrances named Eccentric Molecules

Synthetic

Since his original essence, Molecule 01, Geza has explored other single-note scents made from synthetics and also created perfumes where he has taken a single molecule and melded it with other notes as if to ‘heighten’ the original note

The latest Edition to the Eccentric Molecule family is Molecule 01 + Cistus. So how does this elixir come together? Starting with the Iso E Super, think of it as made up of soft woody and ambery, but it’s a subtle, velvety, and cedar-like scent that interacts subtly with the skin, creating a sort of warmth as it mingles. Not a dominant smell, it enhances and smooths out other notes in a fragrance, and can even boost a perfume’s longevity. Yet here it meets with the distinguished note of Citus.

Although Cistus is a flower, it is resinous in its initial smell, yet it is a multifaceted ingredient. It has a distinctively amber, woody, and tenacious aroma and is valued for its blend of herbal, woody, and resinous notes.

Here is this new fragrance, the two scents meld together but heighten each other, but not in an aggressive way, as the Iso E Super blends with the natural tones of the wearer’s skin, therefore softening the overall effect, and giving it an almost minimal effect

Think of the scent as multifaceted, sweet and salty, animalic yet smooth, and both subtle and insistent. A subtle, sexy skin enhancer, just like its predecessors, will have people stop you in the street to ask what magnificent potion you are wearing
