New Luxury Home: Viral Prefab Housing And Modern Living
Home is where the heart is. Home should be our safe place as well as a container of our most beloved possessions. Not so much the TV or the designer couch, but the record collection, the drawings on the wall from children, and the photographs that hint at a misspent youth or even a beloved family pet. A whole life spent in a brick, timber or glass. But what if you went home one day and it was gone? Initially, you may panic. You could think, ‘Where am I going to sleep tonight?’ Suddenly, possessions mean nothing. What comfort is out there for you now? Well, for many, prefab buildings have been a temporary home in war zones, after natural disasters, or places where resources were scarce. What actually began as a short-term solution to the housing crisis after mass bombing in World War II, prefabs have become a permanent part of modern architecture in several interesting and dynamic ways. Even the idea of houses that are erected speedily is becoming more visible, not as part-time but full-time living. Prefab Houses
Think of Ikea flat-pack furniture on a gigantic and grander scale. Usually, prefabricated homes, also known as ‘prefab homes’, are made of standard pre-crafted panels. With counters, cupboards and windows built in already off-site. They are then easily shipped and put together on site.
The Second World War
The extent of the destruction was so great that the UK needed to erect approximately 150,000 new homes. Prefab housing was introduced for this exact reason. Across Europe, North America, and parts of Asia, similar systems of prefabrication emerged as governments sought fast solutions to unemployment and homelessness.

How to make a House
Many people had been left homeless and jobless since so many buildings had been blitzed in the bombings. Going forward, post WWII, old plane factories were converted to produce these dynamic new modular homes, providing new jobs for the unemployed as well as safe living spaces. They were loved by their new owners, equipped with walls, cupboards and even indoor toilets, something many had not had before. It didn’t matter what the house looked like, but how well it encompassed the needs of daily life.
“Well, at the time we thought: gosh, this is really modern, it’s got a bathroom, you’ve got somewhere to wash your hands, you’ve got a toilet inside. We had one down at the bottom of the garden. So it was luxury to us, you know, and I still remember that.”

Early prefab model
Could you imagine just how quickly one of these houses could be ready to live in? Made out of aluminium alloy and using aviation manufacturing techniques, the AIROH B2 bungalow emerged directly from wartime industry. It was built in large sections and craned into place. The fastest time ever recorded for the house to be assembled was just under an hour (41 minutes to be exact), and without sacrificing any of the home’s actual comfort. Inside, there were fitted kitchens and indoor bathrooms, which reshaped everyday living, since such features were far from standard at the time. The AIROH framed housing as a complete, self-contained system designed to envelop daily life efficiently.

Materials used in construction
From their earliest forms, prefab houses never disguised how they were built; they remained plain and truthful. Aluminium panels, timber frames, and concrete sections were proud to be on display. These materials were chosen because of their availability and performance rather than their physical appearance. This honesty carries through into contemporary prefabs and now, being seen in 3D-printed houses, where layered concrete walls and modules come together. Once again, the luxury lies in having a warm and working home, not necessarily in a beautifully decorated exterior.

Modern Houses
HUF HAUS was founded in 1912 by Johann Huf in the Westerwald region of Germany as a sawmill and carpentry business. While the family company has over a century of history, it shifted to its signature modern, post-and-beam timber prefabricated architecture in 1972. It is a perfect example of modern prefabrication. They use timber frames, which are manufactured off-site and assembled quickly. Built with efficiency, large areas of their structures are exposed, so it’s almost like looking at the homes’ skeletons. But somehow they still manage to provide safety and warmth.

Louis Vuitton Menswear Show
Recently at the Louis Vuitton Fall-Winter 2026 menswear show, prefabricated housing made its way into cultural performance. Pharrell Williams staged the runway around a prefab, designed in collaboration with the Japanese design studio, Not a Hotel. It is described as a solution built on function and human need; how we live, and how we want to be seen.
This futuristic prefab, named DROPHAUS, has glass walls that fully envelop the interior. The building was inspired by a water droplet, and the glass-dominant design seamlessly connects the inside and outside, connecting lived experience with the environment. Modular housing is being taken further than before, starting to combine the materials, the content and now the visible exterior. But this isn’t just useless decoration; it’s all for the lived experience of being in the home.

Samara House
Stepping away from fashion and culture, prefabricated housing has also been put to use where it’s needed most. In Los Angeles, Samara, a company originally founded to design prefabricated backyard units, has been installing modular units for families displaced by the recent wildfires. These homes are designed and manufactured off-site. Built in a factory, shipped in parts, and installed quickly on concrete foundations, these homes function not just as ADUs (accessory dwelling units) but as full, temporary places to live. What was once a backyard add-on has, in this context, become something people actually need, a necessity, a luxury.
3D-Printed House
If contemporary prefabs are this honest in showing the materials used in their construction, 3D-printed housing pushes this even further. Built layer by layer using industrial-scale printing technology, these houses have walls formed from cement-based mixes and retain a ribbed texture. This clearly records each stage of its making, leaving no room for a decorative disguise, relying on the contents within for its value.
But is the 3D-printed house any better than a normal house in terms of sustainability? In some ways, yes; the materials are deposited more precisely, so there is very little site waste, and there is potential for eco-cement mixes that incorporate industrial waste such as recycled glass. However, traditional concrete production accounts for approximately 8% of global CO2 emissions, so if the 3D home relied on a conventional cement mix, its sustainability benefits are somewhat diminished. This is a very new way of building, and so the long-term effects of 3D-printing a house on the environment are still unknown.

New Books 2026
Published in late January, Plugin House reads like a collection of possibilities. Picture this: derelict houses and old buildings crumbling to dust, but rather than use money and manpower to completely bulldoze the land, you can assemble a small ‘plugin house’ inside those ruined homes. What’s even better is that material waste can be reduced by 52-90% compared to the traditional building methods on a site, since they are made in a controlled factory. Although we don’t yet know the long-term effects of plugin houses directly on the environment.
This book looks at prefabricated housing as an affordable and practical response to the global housing crisis, and it echoes the logic of post-war prefabs, which prioritised practicality and necessity over their visual design. In doing so, it supports the idea that value and luxury in housing do not come from pricey materials, but from how the space is organised around everyday life.

Seen in this light, the prefab’s return begins to make sense. Over time, it has surfaced again and again as an answer to the problem of quick and affordable housing, seeing as they are reliable homes that have been around for decades. From post-war bungalows to contemporary ‘flat-pack’ homes and now 3D-printed structures, they remain consistent: build quickly, honestly, and organise space around daily use. What shifts is the definition of luxury housing. It moves away from unnecessary decoration and toward the warmth and reassurance of having somewhere to call home.
