A sometimes frosty country made up of multiple islands, enchanting to those who may travel there. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Sweden? Possibly kanelbullar (cinnamon rolls), Northern Lights, and some sparkling snow. It is fair to say that it is part of the Swedish legacy, but music is almost as important; it has been shaping Sweden’s international image since the 1970s. From those who listen to ABBA and A-ha, to the rise of new artists like Swedish House Mafia and Zara Larsson. Marking entire new generations and dominating global charts, it has created unique yet magnificently diverse music that is both distinguished and influential. What is Swedish Music? 

Swedish music is steeped in history, in folk songs and traditional sounds, like polska, a famous dance with a piece of music in triple time, or songs by “spelmäns”, who are folkloric musicians, who usually play the violin. Yet, Sweden’s music has been shaped by both modern influences and Nordic traditions. It has built a unique soul and a mystical vibrancy. From internationally renowned artists like ABBA, A-ha, or Europe to new names like Zara Larsson; you may have already listened to more Swedish music than you realise. After all, it is a country that has a width and depth to its musical artistry, way beyond most of our knowledge.

Diversity and Inclusion

Interestingly, it is the diversity of music coming from this country that is so intriguing. One might have expected a wave of artists similar to the iconic groups that existed beforehand, since they paved the way, yet there is an extraordinary variety of artists to benefit from their widespread visibility. It is an absolutely astonishing diversity of musical genres that made their way onto the scene instead. 

Swedish Pop Rise 

Well, to begin with, Sweden is the third most influential music exporter, alongside the United States and the United Kingdom. Riding the wave of the super success of bands like ABBA, and despite being a small country, this set of islands manages to produce a plethora of different styles within their musical output. Sugary pop, indie-pop singers, metal, grunge and even dance-pop, the variety is amazing. Pop music, besides the mainstream classics that are largely renowned and loved, encompasses a wide range of subgenres.

Dance-Pop 

Dance-pop is a pop subgenre characterised by EDM (Electronic Dance Music), energetic, and sometimes R&B influences. Artists like Zara Larsson and Tove Lo are widely recognised in the industry for their danceable and energetic sounds. With multiple influences, they are both major figures in Swedish dance-pop who have achieved international success with timeless hits and collaborations with international artists.

EDM-Pop 

EDM-Pop is both an Electronic Dance Music and Pop subgenre that is closely tied to Dance-Pop, because of its energetic and electronic sounds, which are easy to dance to.  Some famous Swedish EDM-Pop artists that you may know, such as Avicii and Swedish House Mafia, have built their influence on house productions, based on beats and pop sensibilities, sometimes collaborating with significant pop artists, turning them into essential, life-of-the-party-like artists. 

Indie-Pop

Indie-Pop is a subculture originating from British post-punk in the late 1980s. This type of pop music is distinguished by an opposition to mainstream pop and tackles deeper, even darker themes, and prioritises light guitar and synth sounds. Swedish indie pop is renowned for its often melancholic, but above all electronic, and well-written songs, with artists like Lykke Li and Peter Bjorn and John. 

Swedish Rock

One may say that there is a stark contrast between pop(ular) genres that top the charts and the rock and metal scenes that are acclaimed worldwide. Indeed, several distinct subgenres are shaping Sweden’s rock and metal culture. Sweden has been a major scene for rock music since the 1980s, more popular than those from the rest of Europe. It is home to a wide range of progressive rock bands. You may be familiar with some of them.

Garage Rock Revival

Sweden has emerged as a significant force in the garage rock revival since the late 1990s. Bands like The Hives and The Hellacopters have helped bring the genre back into the international spotlight with fast, aggressive songs, sharp aesthetics, and explosive live performances. Garage rock is a subgenre that, far from being lost in the crowd, stands out for its punk influences and also for the influences it has had on other rock genres, particularly alternative and indie rock. 

Hard Rock

Hard Rock is a rock genre that first emerged during the 1960s, coinciding with the rise of garage rock. It is characterised by the use of aggressive sounds and distorted electric guitars. Sweden is renowned for having a highly developed hard rock scene, both in terms of melodies and the legendary performances of certain bands. You may have already heard of the band Europe and their timeless hit ‘The Final Countdown’, which became a classic of 1980s rock music. They are just one of many bands contributing to the international notoriety of Swedish hard rock.

Swedish Metal Bands

Did you know that Sweden is one of the most influential countries in metal? It has produced bands in almost every subgenre, and, in fact, there is even one originating from Sweden, known as the “Gothenburg sound.” This particular style emphasises energetic and melodic guitar riffs and is renowned worldwide, with groups like In Flames, At the Gates, and Dark Tranquillity, who are considered leaders of the genre. Besides, there are tons of well-known metal bands. To name just one, we can mention Ghost, which produces music with mostly metal but also sometimes rock influences, which makes it really accessible, even for people who are not originally fans of this type of music.

Sweden’s Indie and Folk songs

Sweden, besides having a large recognition for its panel of pop and rock scenes, has also another type of music, less prominent but no less exceptional. It is possible to move from shiny, energetic, mainstream musical genres to a completely different atmosphere, one that is much calmer and more relaxing, sometimes even deeper, addressing darker themes, which leads the audience to experience the music in a whole new dimension. Indie music has its origins directly in the source of original Scandinavian music, with folk sounds ranging from instruments to choirs, sometimes integrating them into chill and spellbinding melodies. 

You may love to listen to some of the incredibly delightful records made by these indie artists, such as Amanda Bergman or the First Aid Kit sister band, which are both known for their vocal performances and an intimate atmosphere around their melodies. 

Drain Music Genre

Then there are genres that are more recent, but no less popular. Formed in 2013 and consisting of big name rappers like Bladee, Ecco2K, Thaiboy Digital, and the producer Whitearmor, the electronic, Cloud Rap inspired ‘drain gang’ has attracted listeners worldwide. They have sold out shows in London, and Bladee has performed as part of the lineup for Lido Festival organised by the British artist Charli XCX.

The influences of the genre can be seen not just in the listeners dedication but also in the fashion influence, with Bladee and Ecco2K seen attending Paris Fashion Week in 2025, for the Acne Studios Show. Fans of the genre are taking influence from these artists, whether that is through tapping into archival fashion, or darker, grungier styles. It has surpassed its limitations as a musical style, becoming a part of many drainers’ lifestyles.

Behind the curtain

It is not just the front of house that is influenced by Swedish artists. Behind the scenes, great producers and musicians are creating and helping notorious artists to bring their art to the world’s gaze. With major collaborations between Swedish artists and universal musicians, the reputation of Scandinavian artists is not to be proven. Think about Taylor Swift’s latest album, “The Life Of A Showgirl.”It was produced by Max Martin and Shellback, two illustrious Swedish producers who have produced some of the biggest hits of the last two decades, reinforcing the image of the Swedish music industry abroad. 

Currently, Swedish House Mafia is one of the most famous EDM groups worldwide. Known for their electro/house anthems, they produce their own work, but also collaborate and produce for other famous artists, such as The Weeknd, Usher or Sting. 

Sunnan, a Group That Shakes Up the Rules

Imagine a band that embodies all these paradoxes about Swedish music. One that could combine the lightness of pop with the rock soul that distinguishes Swedish music, and a hint of indie melodies, like a melting pot of different influences that turns out to be creating a brand new style of sound. 

That is what Sunnan is. Originally formed during the pandemic, the band brings together five well-known artists who would not have met otherwise. They released their debut album in 2024, which is entitled « Cinema.» This album earned them two Swedish Grammies nominations in 2025 and also great praise from major Nordic critics.

Later on, they released an EP, which follows the album, or as the band likes to call it, ‘the afterparty to the movie’ called Cinema Sound System. This album has reinforced their position as an established rock band and developed their signature sound, with new music that was even more surprising and innovative than the previous album.

Since then, Sunnan known a dazzling rise and has just released a new single, their first to debut on the international stage, entitled ‘Sail (Lady In Waiting).’ This brings out a delightful rock signature, with a slight touch of alternative and electronic melodies, making it even more powerful.

The band describes the track as ‘the manifestation of a new genre’, and it is only a foretaste of what their upcoming album, entitled ‘Spaghetti Soul,’ will be, set for release in Autumn 2026.

Eventually, Swedish music, besides being diverse and full of paradoxes, is combining traditions and modernity. The horizons of the Swedish musical landscape are wider than it seems, and with bands like Sunnan and the variety of artists stepping into the light, Sweden will continue to expand its musical influence.
