The Amber Route: Beautiful in Look and Scent

There was the Silk Road, and then there was the Amber Road. Both inspired us to explore newfound wonders, tastes, smells and experiences. One brought traders from the Far and Middle East to Europe, carrying unknown spices and luxurious fabrics to our shores. The other involved the transfer of Amber from coastal areas of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean. Prehistoric trade routes between Northern and Southern Europe were defined by it. Amber Route

As an important commodity, sometimes dubbed ‘the gold of the north’, amber was transported from the North Sea and Baltic Sea. Around the area, amber stones have been harvested for years; these little golden nuggets of hardened tree sap are not the only surprise to be found off the Baltic Coast.

Baltic States

Look on a world map, and you may see what looks like just a tiny line, but delve closer, and you will find Curonian Spit, a transnational UNESCO World Heritage Site shared between Lithuania and Russia. The southern curve of land is only 98 kilometres long, a thin sandy peninsula that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea.

Nida

Even less well-known, situated on the strip of land, is the tiny resort town of Nida, a tourist destination for Lithuanians. Small with only 1,650 residents, it has developed into a popular and oft-visited place in the Baltic States. Its deep history can be traced back to the 15^th century AD when German people established it; up until 1945, the town was recognised as a part of Prussia. From the late 19th century, its dynamic sand dune landscape became popular with landscape and animal painters from the Kunstakademie Königsberg arts school.

Nobel Prize in Literature 1929

Writers also congregated on the island; for example, after Thomas Mann won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929, he used the prize money to build a cottage in the fishing village of Nida. Musicians were also long-standing inhabitants, and since 2001, Nida has held a yearly Jazz Festival.

Ecology

Nida is an ecological treasure trove where moving dunes, coastal pine forests, and wetlands coexist. The flora and fauna feature a blend of resilient sand-adapted species and abundant wildlife, making it an incredibly unique habitat within the region. Known for its famous towering sand dunes, which are home to specific grassy flora. Because of their prevailing pale colour, these dunes are often referred to as ‘the grey dunes’. Meadows and wetlands include rare, protected, and diverse plant species that thrive in specialised floodplain meadows, such as the Grobštas forest meadow. Its location makes it a critical resting and breeding ground for birds. Basically, it is a little slice of paradise.

New Niche Perfume 2026

It is this lesser-known utopia that became the next point on the map of inspiration for perfume magician Nick Stewart from Gallivant. An ardent explorer himself, he has taken the very flora, fauna and historical essence and bottled it.

The elixir opens with a flash of ‘perfumed’ citrus from Mandarin, sitting as an unexpected partner with the soft spice of Cardamom and a hint of powdery smoke from Incense, as if the sun is shining on the bach but the depth of the forest is not far away. The heart is deepened yet has a sense of ‘openness and warmth’, with Tea notes a shining, effervescent burst from a Sunflower Accord alongside the joyous florals of Jasmine, Violet and Lilac, all rooted in the powdery earthiness of Orris; the flora raises her colourful head.

Its crescendo brings the woods to the fore with softening Cedarwood depth of animalic, yet soft earthy Patchouli, the green earthy damp of Moss sitting with the warm herbaceous edge of Tolu Balsam before finally falling into, of course, with its location, the rich creamy comfort of a resinous vanillary Amber accord.

Amber itself, of course, is a resin that drips from trees and forms into a hard golden shell. Its scent in perfumery is imagined not unlike a silent flower whose smell can never be captured and therefore is only made up of imagined ideas. Amber in perfumery is an accord usually made up of Vanilla, Labdanum and Musks.

This is elegance personified and bottled into a glass vessel. It is the gentle breeze on sea to sand via the sun that brings with it a soft kiss of floral notes. It is that inescapable moment when the sun first hits its gentle and joyous rays after cool days. It is a warm caress of blended perfection, sweet without sugar, warm without sticky heat, and subtle yet with a real presence. And like any perfume from Nick’s stable, it is the perfect side of very wearable but different enough to make its flag stand upright, bold and seen.
