London based Spandana Gopal is going to launch the brand Tiipoi and with it its first homeware collection at Designjunction during London Design Festival this September. It was created with a view to harnessing present-day India’s manufacturing capabilities by using materials that have a true currency in India’s tradition reinterpreted through modern design.

Seva or to serve in Sanskrit (left) is a turned rosewood platter with different sized bowls inspired by the concentric Indian Anjarapetti, Masala Dabba or spice box. Ayasa ( right) are stackable spun brass and copper containers, with lids made from Ayurvedic Neem wood that is antibacterial.

Tiipoi’s first collection of tableware manufactured in India, showcases the potential of traditional production centres across the country using materials such as brass, copper, wood and stone that have a direct resonance with objects of daily life.

This collection has been inspired by design features and forms of everyday objects found in the Indian home that have been largely overlooked despite their functional and utilitarian value.

Diya (top left) is the Hindi word for a palm sized, traditional terracotta oil lamp which inspired the stackable set of cast brass, plated copper and nickel candle holders that can be used for both pillar candles and tealights by being flipped over. Deepa, (top right) on the other hand is Tiipoi’s fragrant candle that is set in soapstone. Loha (bottom right & left) is a pure copper bowl with lid that can be used as a serving tray.
