Wrapped Up In The Luxury: Villa Monastero, Lake Como, Italy
Imagine lighting a candle and letting it transport you to one of the most beautiful places in the world: Lake Como, Italy. It’s late April, and the days are finally longer. At seven p.m., the sun hasn’t yet set. The bright rays feel warm on your skin as you walk through a luxurious Italian villa. Perhaps that’s Villa Monastero botanical gardens. Centuries ago it wasn’t a villa at all, but an ancient Cistercian monastery. Curious to think a place full of sweet Wisteria and grandeur was once a quiet locus of monastic life. Find out how a new scent candle is Wrapped Up In The Luxury: Villa Monastero, Lake Como, Italy
We do tend to love places full of history, whether this be grand buildings or rich gardens. Imagine strolling amongst the statues, built from faded marble; envision waking up to the view of the clear-blue lake, and the scent of flora and fauna in the air.
Suddenly, feel overcome with the wish to leave the urban lifestyle behind in favour of this Edenic temptation. Maybe not a luxurious villa, but a place near Lake Como, Italy, soaking in the atmosphere.
There in this garden paradise, the little fountain calls out ‘dip your hand in’, and the coolness of the water feels like a magical elixir. The splash hits the wild Wisteria, like crystals in the sunlight.
The surrounding florals have an emotive pull, pink Roses reminiscent of childhood gardens, Jasmine so decadent and regal, fluffy-headed Hydrangeas, and more opulent drooping Wisteria.
Feel the very spirit sewn between the bulbs by the Mornico family, who reconstructed the Villa Monastero with its botanical gardens from a monastery into their home in 1645.
The ever-changing owners of the villa filled it with exotic vegetation, including deep green American and African palms, bright, vital citrus fruits, and pretty pink Oleanders. But were the flowers always there, bright and playful, since the days of the monastery? Or did the daughters of the Mornico family choose varieties that reminded them most of their affluent youth?
Surrounded by snow-capped Alps and countless trees, breathing in the fragrant, sweet nectar of the purple and white Wisterias, the natural environment that envelops the villa is a luxury of its own.
Many are said to find love in Italy, but here, the love is all around. Dreamy and sensual, and that does not have to be mere escapist fiction.
Bring The Allure Of Lake Como Into Your Home
Luckily, our olfactory senses can transport us into the Wisteria-filled walkways and slow, relaxing boat rides along Lake Como. While catching a flight to Italy may not be on everyone’s immediate to-do list, filling the home with a magical scent can be.
Perfumery house Told London has just come out with an elegant soy-wax ‘Dancing Light, Lake Como Candle’, inspired by the founding couple’s current home base of this most renowned area. Candles set the mood, and they help us unwind. And there is no better way to put the mind at ease than to think of an Italian holiday destination.

Lake Como candle’s scent palette embodies the serenity that lingers through the picturesque Italian region, filled with natural bliss. The top notes of Fig Leaf, Honeysuckle and an Aquatic Accord are reminiscent of a city during the hot summer months, where being by the water is all you want.
The floral heart notes of Muguet, Wisteria, Magnolia and Star Jasmine bring the romantic nostalgia. The base notes, consisting of Musk, Cedarwood and Sandalwood, give the candle its depth and longevity.
A huge amount of work alongside the perfumer, Nic Mastenbroek and the Told Family has brought this magical location to the homes of all. In order to bring longevity and stability to this candle, Nic created three accords to fully power the floral-watery scent.
The initial accord, a grouping of notes that create one note, is an aquatic accord. This is, of course, a lake rather than a sea, so this scent is not so much about salty water but a lake essence. With the essence of grasses, woods, and the flora and fauna, they meld smoothly with the water. It’s an uplifting, vibrant accord that adds a fresh, intriguing note to the candle.
Next up comes the Wisteria Accord. This beautiful drooping Lilac flower smells sweet, musky, and floral, and is often described as a mix of Roses, Honey-facets, and delicate Freesia. Also in this ‘make up’, find a soft lingering greenness that allows for floral sweetness but a fresher, brighter trail to it.
Finally, the base notes are the woods. Here, the Sandlawood accord brings the creamy wood it’s famous for, but alongside it, a musky, almost sweet spice joyousness abounds.
The culmination means that the delicate florals that are sweet and honeyed intertwine with the bracing freshness of the lake waters and comforting creamy woods, wrapping together the experience.
Scents have the power to transport us anywhere on Earth. Whether that’s a lavish Italian villa or a state of bliss, we may not always be able to carve out the time of our busy schedules to travel far. And with colder months approaching, it is almost an ritualistic to cuddle up in a blanket and light a candle. The Told ‘Dancing Light, Lake Como Candle’ will fill any room with the relaxed comfort of nature and luxurious privilege to unwind.
