Honey is as diverse as the flowers, flora and fauna that the bees drink nectar from. The industrious honey bee can indulge in nectar from trees, plants and flowers in very different regions and climates around the world. Honey use and production have a long and varied history, beginning in prehistoric times. Several cave paintings in Spain depict humans foraging for honey at least 8,000 years ago. The Taste of Honey

It goes from delicate florals to zesty fruity, even to smoky, woody and resinous notes. This may sound strange, but if we think for one moment how many places in the world produce honey and the different plants, climates and terrains of these, it should be no surprise that honey tastes are gloriously vast.

How Bees Make Honey

Bees make honey, as we often know, by collecting nectar from flowers, plants and honeydew, which contain enzymes and water, that are then processed within the hive.

Strange to know, but they actually regurgitate the nectar to other bees, who continue to break it down, and the bees use their wings to fan the nectar, creating airflow that evaporates the water content for it to be the rich, golden, viscous liquid we know.

Its scent is sweet, warm, and floral; still, of course, the aroma varies depending on the nectar source, so its aroma can range from fruity, woody, or grassy to earthy, medicinal, or even savoury and pungent.

Another ingredient that is not as commonly known as honey yet is as delicate and multifaceted, is rich and deep, Oud. This rich perfume ingredient needs special circumstances to be produced.

It comes from the Aquilaria tree, also known as the Agarwood tree. When the tree gets sick, its ‘autoimmune system’ creates a substance to heal it. This material, mixed with the wood, becomes the precious Oud. Like Honey, it has many facets in smell (not taste) from earthy, resinous, smoky to woody, damp, leathery and animalic.

Both elixirs, Honey and Oud, span ancient pathways and have multiple facets and rare or unique versions. Both need specialist care, both need expert knowledge and a light yet loving touch. Each is also a precious note in perfumery.

Floris, the British luxury perfume house, created a unisex scent in 2014 called Honey Oud. Initially created by Floris London Private Collection being melded especially for Harrods.

The Amber-Woody elixir opens with the fresh brightness of Bergamot sitting next to rich golden English honey, summoning up an English garden in full bloom, with the brightest sun shining.

The heart brings the introduction of the Oud, known also as Agarwood, alongside the pretty velvet notes of Rose and the dark notes of Patchouli. The Oud here, being so multifaceted, acts as a link between the bright richness of the top and the floral, earthy notes of the heart, linking all the facets of the Oud to its counterparts, whilst also giving depth and opulence.

It’s finale, a crescendo of more Oud softened again as it links with soft richness of Amber, creamy Vanilla, all encompassing, cloud-like touch of Musk and earthy, leather of Labdanum.

Here, the ancients’ elixirs of both Honey and Oud collide in Amber-Wood scent. Now, the collection has been expanded and new auxiliary products have been introduced.
