Les Essences de Diptyque

This new collection is made up of six eau de parfum fragrances inspired by scentless natural treasures, including Coral, Mother-of-Pearl, Bark, Peacock feather, Water Lily, and Desert Rose Crystals.

In perfumery, the idea of a smell in many a concept that has been in play since the early days of scent is just as important as the smell of a flower or tree. Think, if you like, of Ambery fragrances. Amber is fossilised tree resin, a hard, yellowish, and translucent substance formed over millions of years. It has no scent, so why is it such a major element in perfumery?

It is simply the idea of it that rings true for so many, signifying warmth, depth, and a rich, enveloping quality to perfumes. It is imaginary and called a ‘fantasy note’.

Working with this concept, Diptyque have also reinterpreted new natural elements through perfumery to create unique olfactory experiences that explore abstract scent profiles and turn them into exemplary new fragrances.

All five of them are longer-lasting eaux de parfum and run the gamut of fantastical and natural. ideas we may have dreamed of smelling now have a reality.

Coral Oscuro

Floral Aquatic fragrance that speaks of coral, flourishing across the bed of the Venetian lagoon. Its intricate red patterns ripple to the rhythm of the waters, the vibrant colour contrasting with the opacity of the depths. Renaissance painters had a name for this interplay of light and dark: chiaroscuro. This, in turn, inspired the name of Corail Oscuro. Corals are marine invertebrates that sit in colonies on the sea beds.

Fresh and green, the notes include bright and zesty Bergamot, lively perfumed Mandarin green notes and soft creamy sandalwood to wrap and meld the notes.

‘I wanted to explore a sense of saltiness, and the fiery reds of a coral garden. A shimmering, stony, mineral flower clasped between the light of the sky and the darkness of the sea.’

Lilyphéa

Next up is Lilyphéa, which celebrates the noted beauty in the plant world and also in the world of art: the Water Lily. Lilyphéa turns the spotlight onto this remarkable aquatic plant, rising from the depths of a pond to reveal its beauty to the world. On glittering waters, it floats majestically. A dreamlike, inspirational vision.

The name of this potent fragrance is a blend combining “water lily” and “Nymphéas”, the French title for Claude Monet’s Water Lilies series.

‘In Lilyphéa, I focused on white lily leaves: a crisp, vibrant, glossy and tender green, plump and fat with sap. To capture the energy of this green while making it accessible, I countered the high-octane galbanum essence and sappiness of the violet leaf absolute by pairing them with sweet, cosy Madagascar vanilla absolute.’

The nose, Nathalie Cetto

The notes that make up the juice are a fresh, warm spice blend of Cardamom and Violet leaves, which develop into heart notes of fresh greenness of Galbanum and fizzy, fresh Ginger, and rest on a warm base of creamy Vanilla and soft, warm wood of Sandalwood.

Rose Roche

This elixir evokes the desert rose, an intricate rose-like formation of crystal clusters, shaped by air, water and the sun. Exposed to the winds of the desert, over time, this mineral, crystalline flower develops its graphic and distinctive contours.

‘This fragrance was inspired by the winds that shape the desert sands, their unexpected precision over time. I wanted to capture the primal heat of the blistering desert winds with a scent reminiscent of hot, mineral sand. I infused this Rose-heavy floral with contrast, lacing the sparkling lightness of Citrus fruits with deep, textured Patchouli.

Fabrice Pellegrin Perfumer

This unusual formulation is celebrated in scent with notes of rich, fully-formed Moroccan Rose, bright freshness of Lemon, added earthy facets of Patchouli and finished off with ambery, musky and animalic Ambroxan.

Lunamaris

Next up is an exploration in perfume of Mother of Pearl. The natural treasure, symbolic of purity hidden inside a private shell. Once revealed, its delicate beauty exerts a delightful fascination.

Vibrant notes of pink peppercorn mingle with subtle accords of incense and ambery rockrose. The name of this potent fragrance evokes the iridescence of mother of pearl, recalling the gentle, gleaming reflections of the moon on the waters of the sea.

‘I wanted to bottle all pearl’s iridescent nuances. To translate this visual effect into a fragrance, the composition draws on a combination of raw materials. In this scent, each ingredient is exactly where it needs to be, converging in a radiant harmony shimmering with silky nuances. Striking Pink Peppercorn, colourful spices, the pure, resinous note offered up by Incense, and the ambery warmth of the Rock Rose’

This ambery warm fragrance comes together with notes of soft spice via Pink Pepper, resinous leather facets of biblical Frankincense and a depth of leathery, woody, and sweet animalic facets via Labdanum.

Bark

Bois Corsé evokes the vital protective mantle and textured outer layer of a tree. A fragrance with a lingering sillage, its name a play on words: “écorce” is French for “bark”, “corsé” means “full-bodied” like the coffee aroma celebrated here.

Exposed to the elements, it takes shape over time, developing relief textures that are coarse, irregular and yet pleasing to the touch

‘Bois Corsé was inspired by the beauty of nature in its rawest form. I focused on the texture of wood, and in particular rough bark, and how pleasant it feels beneath the fingers despite its unevenness, crags and nicks.‘

Nathalie Cetto, Perfumer

The celebration is a woody-ambery creation that honours the warmth and strength of bark. With creamy, rich Tonka bean, soft Sandalwood, and strong black Coffee notes, it embodies the depth and richness of the forest.

Lazulio

Finally, the last scent in the collection comes as a somewhat legendary mystery bottled: The peacock feather, with its eye-like pattern, connects to themes of the “third eye” and spiritual awakening.

Here, the essence draws parallels between the deep, crystalline beauty of the stone Lapis Lazuli and the stunning majesty of a peacock feather.

‘Lazulio captures in a fragrance the striking beauty of a peacock feather. I wanted to create a contrast between the shimmering accord of sharp, vibrant rhubarb and the exquisitely enveloping facets of benzoin. I chose rose and vetiver to reinforce this interaction of colours and textures, imagining the scent of a gem worn by this fabulous bird.’

This is a scent with a woody and amber base utilising lively Rhubarb, sweet resin of Benzoin, dry, straw-like roots of Vetiver, with a final flourish of Floral Notes
