Her chosen perfumer, Ernest Beaux, created a complex blend of over 80 natural and synthetic ingredients, making unprecedented use of synthetic chemical compounds, which at its time was revolutionary. These aldehydes provided a unique “clean,” sparkling, and abstract quality that enhanced the floral notes and made the scent last longer.
The naming of No.5
Coco Chanel chose the name “No. 5” because it was the fifth sample Beaux presented, and five was her personal lucky number; she also launched it on May 5, 1921. This simple, numerical name was unconventional for the time and helped establish a strong brand identity.
Minimalist Bottle
The perfume’s simple, rectangular, laboratory-vial-inspired bottle was a stark contrast to the elaborate, overly decorative bottles popular in the era. The design emphasised the fragrance itself and has become an iconic cultural artefact, even commemorated by artist Andy Warhol.
