Fall in Love With The History of British Perfume

When we think of perfume, we often relate it to the French, long held beleifs that they are the rules in the world of perfume. But actually, that’s not quite right, and the idea of Perfume (meaning through smoke) has many of its roots in the Middle East. British perfume history spans ancient herbal uses to modern luxury, evolving from masking odours with natural ingredients, like Lavender, and Rose in crowded smelly cities via apothecaries, to the rise of iconic houses like Floris & Penhaligon’s in the 18th/19th centuries. In the UK, royal patronage aided the rise of scent use, establishing a distinct heritage alongside scientific advances that brought synthetics, creating the sophisticated perfume industry we know today. But the UK is also home to great niche fragrance brands and has been a part of the journey in small batch perfumery since its growth from the mid 1980’s. Meet Fine Scents, the newest British elixir on the block.

The history of perfume in the UK

Ancient Britons used herbs, flowers, and resins for spiritual and personal scenting. Post The Plague (1665), perfumed baths and “sweating houses” grew, with ingredients like Sulfur, Saltpetre, and Ambergris used to mask ugly smells, from places and people.

The Silk Routes

The Industrial Revolution and Empire brought exotic spices, while the French Revolution pushed Britain to commercialise fragrances, creating a wealthy consumer base. Victorian science introduced synthetic molecules, making scents cheaper and enabling new aromas. Ultimately, this meant fragrances were far more affordable and readily avaiable then ever before.

French Perfume

This country is infamous for selling perfume to the world. It is considered so important because France established itself as the global leader through centuries of tradition, exceptional craftsmanship, unique raw materials (like Grasse’s flowers), and innovation, making its scents synonymous with luxury, elegance, and artistry that tell a story and define personal identity. It’s a cultural pillar, deeply ingrained in French heritage, seen as an essential accessory alongside food and wine, blending nature’s best with sophisticated science and emotional depth.

But we plucky Brits have our own unique traditions and perfumers like Floris and Penhaligons held royal warrants, and Charles Lillie introduced scented snuff and published The British Perfumer (1822). Even the Lavender from Mitcham (in Surrey) was considered superior to its French cousin.

The UK now boasts a thriving scene with dozens, if not hundreds, of niche British perfumers and newer indie brands. These are houses that are sold in the best stores around the world, and Britain is certainly seen as a trend leader in the specialised market

Fine scents London

The latest brand to reach our shelves is Fine Scents. Interestingly, the brand has melded British Heritage into some of its first products. The home fragrances and body care collections are named after British Locations. Meet Whitehall Gardens (in Westminster, London), a candle that brings the joy of the smell of the morning dew alive. Clean and crisp, notes imbued with Pine woods and Olibanum with a tiny hint of Cinamon and Almond, which makes this scent so warm and inviting. Or Turnagain Lane (Farringdon, London) takes your senses to a place of feminine euphoria with bright citrus, soft fruity notes of Rose and Vanilla. Think blossoming wild flowers in a country garden, with a touch of flirtatious warmth from soft woods and musks.

Body Care

This collection follows through with London place-name inspiration, like Hyde in the Park hand cream, which conjures euphoric and free-spirited vibes. With top notes of citrus and Blackcurrant, followed by Fig, Rose and blended with a salty sea breeze, it is finished off with soft Sandalwood and Musk to encompass an illumination. Or Mayfair Affair, which is a deliciously decadent and a tiny bit sweet, with notes of Rhum Dried Fruit Cinnamon, Vanilla Hazelnut and Tobacco.

Some of the scent stories go across both home scents and body care, but the latest edition is three new perfume scents to the collection: Fashionably Late, Éminence and Joie de Sannes. Each of the three has been created by master perfumers, elevating them to majestic elixirs.

The scent of arrival, gliding into the room, heels on marble, silk gliding over skin, a flicker of diamonds in candlelight. Fashionably Late is an expression of confidence and allure: bold yet restrained, sensual yet immaculate. It leaves an impression long after the evening ends. Elegant. Enigmatic. Entirely unforgettable. It’s a layered woosh of decadence in a bottle, opening with the most flirtatious of notes, richly floral and narcotic Tuberose, which meets with a soft warmth in the heart of powdery floral with honeyed facets of Mimosa and Cashmeran, with a final crescendo of Soft sandalwood and warming Amber.

Described by the house as a perfume of Freedom and Reckless Glamour.  A love letter to the art of living daringly. Imagine a midnight drive through a glittering city: the hum of music, the gleam of lights, and the delicious pull of possibility. Éminence captures freedom at its most luxurious. It opens with the scent of freedom, a Marine Breeze, the rush of the wind over a salty ocean. Next comes the subtle nuances from the earthy, fresh, and subtly citrusy wood of Cedar with a final flush of podwery, earthy, rooty and almost animalic Patchouli. From the Ocean to the Earth and everywhere in between.

The final in the set of three is explained by the house as a Fragrance of Carefree Elegance and Summer Shenanigans. An ode to endless summer: golden afternoons in Provence, laughter carried on the breeze, and champagne that never stops pouring. Joie de Sannes embodies effervescent ease and refined simplicity, capturing the joy of living beautifully, without hurry. Whether it’s July or January, it brings the warmth of golden light to your day. It opens with a blast of fresh and fruity joy with Cassis, Grapefruit, and warmth from Pink Pepper. In its heart, think of the wineries, lush and bursting grapes alongside floral hits of Magnolia and Rose.
Then its finale is a crescendo of softness, wrapping everything together with Ssft Sandalwood and white Musks.

As Fine scents add to their roster, it is as if it is travelling between two countries. It’s a London homestead but also a strong connection to the hillside and glittering nightlife of France, bringing together the best of both worlds: scented.
