Shaking Up The Beautiful World of Fragrance

There are the ways things are done, an order, a recipe, an age-old tradition. After all, you don’t bake a cake by adding the flour to the eggs first, or build a house from the top floor down. But what if, let’s say, you choose to break away from a tried and tested method? Maybe it’s a way to shake things up, find new inspiration and fresh thinking? This is exactly what perfumer Linda Pilkington of Ormonde Jayne did for her three latest launches for the Four Corners of the Earth Collection; and oh boy, were the results stunning or what?

Pablo Picasso

Well, this may well sound like an interesting idea, but beware, there needs to be a whole lot of learning before you go changing things. Attributed to the Spanish painter and sculptor Pablo Picasso, the saying goes, ‘Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.’ Another artist, Salvador Dalí, had his own version, ‘Begin by learning to draw and paint like the old masters. After that, you can do as you like; everyone will respect you.’

After all, technique and discipline are necessary precursors to creative freedom, as noted in various analyses. True originality comes from understanding the foundations deeply, not from ignorantly messing with the rules.

Mastering a traditional way before attempting a “new way” is often the way newness comes about; creativity is the defeat of habit.

Niche Perfumes

It is exactly this thinking that brought about the new Re-Imagined fragrance collection from Ormonde Jayne.

‘The Re-Imagined concept was a challenge and turned out to be much more difficult than I expected: obliged to step outside of my normal mindset and change the way I see a perfume or the thought pattern interlinking, name, story and new ingredients. There were moments where I felt I was not getting anywhere, but then I devised a new way to come up with a name by turning things on their head and starting backwards, from the end rather than from my usual beginning. After that, the ideas began to flow.

I took names of books, songs and films, cut them up, put them in a bowl and took them out like a “Lucky Dip”. A new adventure chosen at random, selected by chance, or perhaps by destiny.

At last, I was on a roll.’

New Niche Perfume 2026

The new three scents incorporate ingredients from the four corners of the Earth, re-tuned for the rhythm of now.

Patchouli d’Atlas

Where stone and shadow are carved and bottled via Cedarwood Patchouli and Musk. This is an elixir reworking Patchouli and bringing it into the 21st century.

Patchouli Flower

Patchouli, the tropical, shrubby perennial herb, thrives in hot, humid climates, with partial shade and rich, moist, acidic soil with well-distributed rainfall. The Cedar thrives in temperate or mountainous regions that are often colder or have different moisture levels than tropical jungles. They don’t grow together but are well-known bedfellows in perfumery.  They are highly complementary base notes that enhance each other’s woody, earthy, and grounding characteristics. Here, however, the structure of them is played with as both are not base notes.

The scent opens with the spice of Pink Pepper, and warm spice of Cardamom and Saffron, with the added brightness of Lemon,

The heart becomes a bridging point, with a vibrant, woody, spicy, and earthy notes from Akigalawood, alongside dry, resinous, and earthy Cedarwood, with a warmth of both Amber and Cashmeran.

At its base, find deep and enduring, almost ‘clean’ Patchouli, less wet earth, more mineral earth, supported by the musky, and woody scent with salty, mineral facet via Ambroxan, a cocooning from Musk, and softening of the mineral edge from Sandalwood.

This is a  Woody Spicy fragrance designed to be a modern, reimagined take on Patchouli, and interestingly, given the power of the ingredients, its dry down still brings a warm, woody skin-like finish that is truly comforting without being the usual sweetness of ‘skin’ perfumes. A rather deliciously crafted take on the age-old perfume note. Next up

Bijou Zafran

Again, another fragrance that is slightly startling when you see the notes yet is yet again melded to perfection. Opening with two ingredients that seem so far apart, here juicy, fruity Pear meets with earthy, leathery, and hay-like Saffron and rich, smoky, musky facets of Leather. Again, the leather here is slightly less animalic than is often smelt, bringing a modernity to this opening twist.

Saffron

The scent deepens in its heart with earthy, slightly smoky Cypriol, a soft powdery elegance with beautiful Orris, and a warmth with balsamic facets from balsamic Benzoin.

Its finale settles into a warmth anchored base of Patchouli, Musk, and a slightly ‘mineral’ Amber, faceted with the cream of Vanilla and a smooth, earthy, smoky Leather.

This is again on paper, not a quiet scent, it takes the idea of earths and smoky notes and softens them in a sensual way.  A fruity-spicy gourmand that is a sexy, smouldering collection of notes that are deep yet luminous, another contraction that is perfectly blended. Oud Liaisons

And to finish another complex arrangement of unusual notes, melded to perfection. Its opening starts with Rose, unusually, a note found more commonly in the heart of a scent, here she mingles with a touch of darkness via soft, spicy, anisic Liquorice, fired-spice of Pink Pepper, bright light via Lemon.

Liquorice Root

The bright spice of the opening, is followed by a depth like a contrast of light and dark. Here, intensely rich, smoky, resinous, and balsamic Oud that mingles and melds together with soft, powdery Suede, and a smoky, woody, and resinous kick with a hint of resinous Vanilla from Guaiac Wood.

The ending dry sees smoky, earthy, damp and musky Patchouli, musky, and woody comfort from Ambroxan, a soft cuddle from Musk, and a final flourish from creamy, milky, Sandalwood.

If the process Linda went through was about breaking the rules, then this perfume sums up that feeling the most. A fusion of darkness and light, of hard and soft, of power and comfort

Stepping out of daily routines forces your brain to adapt, to undulate to explore in ways that, like the landscapes of these new scents, are never flat.
