We love a rule breaker who doesn’t. It isn’t really an issue in what form they take, or which way they move, shake or turn. we have in the UK a deeply rooted cultural instinct to root for the person punching upward. Whether it’s a cheeky Del Boy type trying to outsmart the taxman or a folk hero like Robin Hood, we do love seeing the ‘little guy’ navigate a rigid system with wit rather than brute force. Take, for example, the perfume Molecule 01 by Escentric Molecules, which turned the entire fragrance industry on its head when it launched in 2006, simply by breaking the rather staid perfumery rules. Iso E Super Perfume

Geza Schoen was a well-regarded perfume nose creating scents for multiple brands. Then one day he noticed something, all the perfumes he really loved all contained a single chemical aroma called Iso E Super. Iso E Super was created in a laboratory at IFF in 1973 and remained largely unknown outside the world of perfumery. So, as a thinker outside the box, he decided to create a perfume built around this one single ‘note’, and so his house Escentric Molecules was born.

Now, this may not seem that strange to make a one-note perfume, but before this, the ‘rules’ of perfumery were about complex blends, dozens, sometimes hundreds, of ingredients working together to create a specific scent profile. Then came Geza Schoen…

Initially, he did not have it easy; the first buyer was anosmic (nose blindness) to the ‘note’ and kicked him out with a flea in his ear. Yet on her way home from work, she kept being stopped and asked about the perfume she was wearing. And so started the massive impact of this fragrance. It’s not something unique to her; many people who wear Molecule 01 can’t actually smell it on themselves after a few minutes (due to the molecule’s size and how it interacts with olfactory receptors), yet they, too, will get stopped in the street by strangers asking what they are wearing.

He went on to create two fragrances in homage to the enigmatic Iso E Super: The Molocule and the Eccentric. One fragrance would contain an unprecedented 65% of the molecule. The rest of the formula would consist of ingredients designed to underscore its laid-back power. Yes, a radical move, the second fragrance was totally non-conformist, it contained only the molecule Iso E Super.

Interestingly, it is not an actual pheromone, yet it is widely known to act like one, creating a subtle, personal aura that draws people in, and one of the most documented effects is its ‘tactile’ ‘velvet’ qualities. It is often described as smelling like “clean, sexy sweat” or warm, velvety skin.

Since its launch in 2006, Escentric Molecules has become a phenomenon. Schoen followed the first pair of fragrances with expressions of other synthetic notes, 02 Ambroxan, 03 Vetiver, 04 Sandalwood, and, in 2020, 05 Cashmeran. Each pair focuses on those rare aroma-molecules that have the radiance and depth of character to stand alone.

The next stage has been the meeting of Molecule 01 + with floral and citrus notes, a single high-quality natural extract. The minimal Iso E Spuer adds 1 to 01: 01 + 1. This is Molecule +. These include an Iris fragrance, a Mandarin, a Patchouli and the latest being Champaca: Molecule 01 + Champaca, which consists of Iso E Super + Champaca.

Champaca rare note in perfumery but has been used in quite a classic way, think of scents like Jean Patou’s Joy, or Tom Ford’s Champaca Absolute. Coming from the extract of the Red Champaca flower, which is found only in India, it is one of the most expensive ingredients in perfumery. A rich, heady, faceted floral with shades of Jasmine and Orange blossom, a touch of Tea and a soft creaminess unfolds.

The flowers are highly revered, considered deeply sacred, primarily within Hindu and Buddhist traditions, due to their association with deities and their use in spiritual rituals. Here, signifying purity, devotion, and enlightenment, with its scent believed to help connect worshippers to the divine.

So think of this scent as a meeting of divinity and an almost sexy skin-like power. Think of a rich and exotic tropical garden after a heavy rain, once the sun begins ot dry the flora and fauna.

It opens brightly with a ‘citrus floral’ vibe from the scented orange flower facets within the Champaca, and this ‘power flower’ grows, opening in the heart, bringing its intoxicating, full, rich floral facets to life. The scent then settles into skin-like, cedar-like wood, smooth, cocoon-warmth of addictive Iso E Super.

The complexity of champaca absolute complements Iso E Super exceptionally well on its own. Because Iso E Super has these very woody yet transparent, very velvety, very cocooning, soft aspects, and then you have champaca, giving it all this complexity, all these different olfactory sensations’

So yes, this is a perfume with only two ingredients rather than one, but this is still rule-breaking at its best. It’s also interesting because it’s using two notes to facilitate a top, middle and base. But does that even matter? Well, not when it’s a magnificent scent. And this is.
