Origin Story

Would the first paradise ever mentioned in a book, and the universal one, be the Garden of Eden? Would this have been the first Utopia? A mythical world, yet the word paradise came from the word ‘pairidaeza’, meaning a ‘walled enclosure’ or a ‘royal hunting park.’ These were lush, heavily guarded, and beautiful gardens built by Persian kings in the middle of arid lands, a true oasis. When the Hebrew Bible was translated into Greek centuries later, the translators used the Greek word paradeisos to translate the Hebrew phrase ‘Garden of Eden.’ Over time, the name of this garden and the idea of paradise became one.
