Juicy Mango

Consider the mango. It’s bright, rich, juicy, summery; it’s sweet but tangy. Even when they’re not in season, mangoes still bring about that feeling of brightness. Bite into a mango and you’ll feel its unique texture, taste its juices. There’s a luscious feel to this tropical fruit.

Symbolism of the Mango

Throughout history, the mango has symbolised abundance, passion and the divine. Some cultures refer to the mango as the “king of fruits.” Others associate it with the gods and the divine. In Southeast Asia, the mango symbolises hospitality and friendship. There was even a cult to the mango during China’s cultural revolution – people believed it symbolised their leader’s sacrifice. 

Travel to Vietnam

When Jovoy perfume house founder François Hénin visited Vietnam‘s Ha Long Bay and tasted the Xoài Cát Hòa Lộc mango of the area, he had a visceral experience. Hénin recalls biting into the mango being “transported” to a world of sweet and sour, lush and rich – the decadence of the fruit. He returned from the trip with that story and a determination to share the feeling. In an effort to pay tribute to those memories, he, with perfumer Véronique Nyberg, developed a rich “composition born of deep passion and rich heritage.”

Mimicking the mango

It’s important to note that the process of creating a mango perfume is different from that of most scents. For many perfumes (for example, a rose perfume), perfumers press the ingredient (e.g. the flower’s petals) to extract a scented oil which can be incorporated into a perfume.

Mangoes, however, do not produce an oil. You can’t squeeze or boil a mango and get out a scented oil to put in a perfume. So Jovoy’s team faced the unique challenge of creating a mango scent without the implement of a mango. The solution was to create an accord: a blend of other implements that mimics a specific scent. In creating this delicate blend, Jovoy perfumers found an ingredient balance that brings out those bright, summery feelings.

Brightness in Winter

Almost universally, mangoes invoke imagery of summertime, of brightness and sunshine. As we enter the colder, greyer time of year, that’s worth a lot. Just a splash of that bright yellow mango colour can lift our spirits – and that’s to say nothing of the smell and taste.

Ha Long Bay Eau de Parfum

Named for the area along Vietnam’s coastlines, Jovoy’s Ha Long Bay Eau de Parfum incorporates top notes of Vietnamese Mango, Cardamom and Black Pepper. Additionally, the scent has middle notes of Leather, Cypriol and Cedarwood, and base notes of Amber Woods, Patchouli and Orcanox.

The fruity and woody Eau de Parfum is warm and tropical. The hint of black pepper adds a spiciness that contrasts the more playful mango scent, combining with deeper and darker middle notes to round out a bold but elegant scent.
